(1) Black Francis: such sincerity, seems like someone who survived being badly bullied. (2) Natalie Merchant: see Kermit and Barney above (3) David Lee Roth: Beautiful Hair (Is he wearing a dance belt?) (4)Iggy Pop: Like a car wreck, I can't look away . . .
1. David Lee Roth: and THAT's how you front a band (plus he has beautiful hair, too). 2. Iggy Pop: he's a performer, but he's no Jim Morrison. 3. Natalie Merchant: snooze, but at least she does that twisty thing with the puppy paws/hands every now and again. 4. Black Francis: lead singer does not equal fronting a band.
While I'm here, who's missing (two obvious, one lesser known queen of awesome-ness, all of whom would probably mop up this week's contest): Prince (and The Revolution) Joan Jett (The Runaways) Kim Shattuck (The Muffs)

I don't think I saw Chris Martin (Coldplay) on this list. Have you seen them in concert? He rocks it. This would also fit the bill for a "newer" band.

If you are looking to define the best 'front man/woman', there is more to the definition than simply the 'best singer'. A front man/woman commands an audience and simply exudes a presence on the stage. There is no formula but you sure know it when you see it.
1) Iggy Pop - Simply one of the greatest front men in rock history. Iggy had so much power and command of the audience. He tore down the walls between singer and audience. He brought the crowd into The Stooges' performances and he took himself into the crowd. He communed with his audience and ushered in the punk era. 2) David Lee Roth - The flamboyance and fun that Diamond Dave brought to the stage was incredible. David is mold from which most of the 80's 'hair' band singers were cast. Like him or not, his personality makes him one of the quintissential front-men of the 80's. 3) Black Francis/Frank Black - The video posted here doesn't really portray Mr. Francis appropriately. He's not flashy and isn't the greatest singer but let's be clear, The Pixies are one of the defining bands of a generation. They created 2 of the 10 ten albums of the 80's and have a long-lasting influence on modern rock. 4) Natalie Merchant - Good singer (although her voice sounds the same pretty much all the time) but definitely not one of the greatest 'front women' of all time. There is a long list of front women that top Ms. Merchant...Debbie Harry, Ann Wilson, Stevie Nicks, Chrissie Hynde, Pat Benatar, Siouxsie Sioux...
1. Black Francis - Knew when to fold them...how many bands today say they were influeced by David Lee Roth? 2. Iggy Pop - a punk rocker yes he was 3. Natalie Merchant - no stage presence, but once drew antennae on a photo of Castro for me. 4. David Lee Roth - Can't be a frontman and be abused by Eddie and Alex. Also, cannot be a front man and be replaced by Sammy Hagar.
The answers are: 1. David Lee Roth - Fits all frontman criteria including departing the band and 3 names. 2. Black Francis - Like the QB in football, the frontman of the band gets all the credit and blame. The albums were awesome, therefore the frontman is too. 3. Natalie Merchant - She's not one of my faves, but I respect the talent. 4. Iggy - Ditto (except he's a he).
